The Metaphor

Stack overflow: recursive calls pile up, memory exhausted, system crashes.

Vibe overflow: iterative changes accumulate errors, visibility into the foundation disappears, system becomes incoherent.

Both are recursive processes hitting a hard limit. The shape is identical.

How It Happens

  • Iteration 1: Generate code. It works. Good.
  • Iteration 2: Prompt to fix an issue. Errors bake in. Still usable.
  • Iteration 3: Patch the patch. More errors. Foundation gets murkier.
  • Iteration N: You’ve lost sight of what the code was supposed to do. The AI is lying about what it fixed. You need more checks to verify anything. More checks mean more complexity.

At some point: the system crosses a threshold. Further iteration produces more problems than solutions. You can’t patch your way out.

Why It’s Sharp, Not Gradual

Early iterations show progress. You feel productive. Then suddenly you don’t. The degradation is non-linear. The threshold appears suddenly because errors compound exponentially, not linearly.

By the time you notice, you’re past the point where refactoring helps.

Real Example

Hackathon week. “Token maxing” through code you barely read. Multiple direction shifts. Each one adds complexity that doesn’t get pruned. The AI reports features as working when they’re not. You add more verification checks. By the end: architectural debt everywhere, confusing signal paths, hard to grow.

Recognize: the code is not salvageable as-is. More iteration will make it worse.

The Only Recovery

Stop iterating on this version. Treat it as a design artifact (blueprint), not construction.

  1. Extract the specification: what does this actually need?
  2. Rebuild from scratch with proper foundations
  3. Implement step-by-step with code review checkpoints

The prototype was useful for discovering the design. Now you engineer it properly.

The Lesson

Speed of AI-assisted iteration is a feature and a trap. Distinguish between:

  • Exploration: fast, messy, disposable. Discover what to build.
  • Construction: deliberate, careful, permanent. Build it right.

Vibe overflow is treating exploration output as construction material. It isn’t. A rapid prototype is a specification. A specification is not a foundation.

Use AI to explore fast. Then engineer the real thing from scratch.
